Prescribed (Controlled) Forest Burning
"Prescribed" or "controlled" forest burning refers to the controlled use of fire in forest management. It is a means to facilitate healthy forest ecosystems and wildlife, and reduce
the risks of wildfire. In the case of prescribed burning, a fire is intentionally ignited and allowed to proceed over a designated area within well-defined boundaries.
Prescribed burning falls under the domain of the Ministry
of Forests and Range (MoFR). The British Columbia Wildfire Act and Wildfire
Regulation outline
responsibilities and obligations with respect to fire use, prevention, control and rehabilitation. For more information, visit MoFR's Prescribed
Fire and Burning
FAQ sections of their website.
